SENA'S SENSORY APPAREL

PRODUCT IDEATION & DEVELOPMENT

The intent of this product development capstone was to ideate and develop an adaptive clothing line offering a five-piece adaptive clothing collection. This process without a doubt encompassed various steps and stages. For purposes of our capstone, we broke down the stages and steps into 4 significant milestones. Milestone 1 essentially was entirely based and comprised of market research including identifying traditional and adaptive apparel markets to analyze what is currently being done in the market and what could be done in the market. Along with this one-on-one interviews and transcripts conducted with people with disabilities were analyzed to create and ideate garments and products meant for the consumer. This process then moved onto digital line development with a mood and trim board being created and utilized to develop one's aesthetic that one could reference, and to visually establish the end target consumer. Thus technical flats were created to begin Milestone 2.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The purpose of my capstone project, Sena's Sensory Apparel, is to fill the void that currently exists in the adaptive apparel market. This void is the complete lack and inclusion of adults, particularly men, in the creation and development of sensory-friendly products in the market. Essentially, within today's current adaptive and traditional apparel markets, there is a lack of products that are both functional, geared towards those with sensory processing disorders, and stylish showcasing and implementing current trends seen in traditional markets. This is what Sena's Sensory Apparel seeks to do through the implementation of unique designs and silhouettes with functional needs and attributes being the axis that is project and line revolve around.

" The purpose of my capstone project is to provide fashionable streetwear products that can be worn by fashionable young men that love to skate that still struggle with sensory processing disorders in their adulthood"

PRODUCT DESIGN AND IDEATION

The design aesthetic for this collection was rooted in creating sensory-friendly streetwear that could not be easily identifiable as adaptive apparel that one who is familiar with and is embedded in streetwear would want to wear. A lot of the design aesthetics for this project revolved around translating current trends seen in streetwear and making them applicable to those with sensory processing disorders. Various unique graphics and prints, box logos, and features are what really add and establish the more modern look seen in streetwear.

Materials and trims were selected based on how they could impact the consumer, along with how they can meet the consumer's functional needs. Most of the closures for the bottoms for instance will either be drawstring and or elastic to allow for the wearer to add compression or release compression as they please. Moreover, the closure for the various pockets for instance will utilize magnetic snaps to easily open and close even acting as a fidget, with the pockets for the cargo being detachable. The materials selected are primarily made of 100% cotton because of the soft hand they provide all the while having great breathability and wicking properties.
